Trip

Luk fell asleep—though that was putting it mildly. He passed out, boneless and satiated. I dozed for a little while—it was impossible not to after such an intense expenditure of energy—but my mind was still racing. I rolled to the side of the bed without disturbing Luk and grabbed my tablet, pulling the covers over us to keep us warm while I continued my research. I’d followed a rabbit trail into the ship’s current records. That had required a little hacking, but their security was sadly flawed. If I was reading their purchase records correctly, they were burning through an astronomical amount of fuel. Either the ship desperately needed an upgrade on their engines, or something screwy was going on.

I dug a little further. No, there was definitely a discrepancy between the amount of fuel bought and the amount of fuel used. Where was the remaining fuel disappearing to?

My mate sighed happily and pulled my thigh over for a pillow. It couldn’t be comfortable, my rough scales pressed against his soft cheek, but he nuzzled against me happily.

What an insane whirlwind of emotions I’d been through in the space of so little time. Happy to devastated and betrayed, to a sense of belonging that was so deep, I wondered if I’d ever be able to let Luk out of my sight again.

But the reality of our situation still niggled at the back of my mind. We weren’t safe. Luk’s brother hadn’t ordered us to the command room to watch him blow up the transport ship for fun. It had been a message. We were stuck. We had no way off this ship, unless I figured something out. Soon.

An invisible bomb was ticking steadily away, and I had no idea how much time was left on the clock. But when it finally hit zero, any illusion of safety would be ripped away.

Luk had linked me into the public access of this ship’s archives. For a bunch of marauders, they had a surprisingly large collection of historical documents. I wasn’t sure that they were accessed often, but I was finding them fascinating reading. I’d found several versions of a ship’s code—or a pirate’s code, depending on the version—and after a bit of sleuthing and comparison and calendar conversions, I’d found the latest one, which seemed to have been created about fifteen Central Alliance cycles ago. I suspected that was before Rok took charge of Jalot Abnar.

I was so engrossed in my reading, I nearly jumped out of my scales when Luk sleepily asked, “What are you doing?”

I grabbed his hand, brushing his knuckles against my lips. Thankfully, our sex had healed the redness and swelling he’d endured from hitting me. “Researching. Did Rok kill the previous captain of this ship to take his place?”

“Of course, he challenged him. That’s the way succession works.”

“What if the captain dies from natural causes?”

“That rarely happens, the life we live. But if a captain dies outside of the honor ring, or anyone in a different position,
